How do you find an underground electrical fault without digging up my yard?
A: We use a cable locator and fault finder to narrow down the problem before anyone picks up a shovel. The method has two steps. First, the fault's distance along the cable is estimated, which cuts the search down to a small section of the run. Then it is pinpointed, often by sending a pulse through the cable and listening for the sound at the fault. After that, the digging happens in one spot instead of along the whole run. That protects your lawn, driveway, and landscaping, and it usually means a faster repair.

What if 8-1-1 will not mark my line?
A: That is normal, because 8-1-1 only marks lines owned by utilities. North Dakota One Call says its locates do not include lines you installed to private facilities, like a detached garage, a well, or a yard light, and that private lines are the responsibility of the homeowner or excavator. If 8-1-1 will not mark it, we will. We trace private lines running to shops, barns, garages, and other outbuildings so you know where they are before anyone digs. You still need to call 8-1-1 for the utility lines.

What are the signs of a buried wiring problem?
A: Watch for a detached building that lost power while the breaker in the main panel looks fine, breakers that trip repeatedly, flickering lights or weak voltage, motors or pumps that run poorly, and repairs that keep failing. Before you call, check that a breaker or GFCI has not tripped, since one GFCI can shut off several outlets at once. If everything checks out and the problem is still there, the fault may be in a buried line. Frequent tripping or flickering can also come from an overloaded circuit, so we track down the real cause before we recommend a fix.

Can you locate old buried wiring that nobody has records of?
A: Yes. Older properties often have lines nobody has records for, such as wires installed by a previous owner, older undocumented installs, and runs from a pole or transformer to a building.
